The Loire Atlantique (translation) and La Manche (translation) working hand in hand for the first large-capacity offshore wind farm ever built in the United States! Iberdrola, one of the three largest electricity suppliers in the world, announces that it has retained General Electric (GE)-, via its American subsidiary Avangrid Renewables for the supply of wind turbines for the Vineyard Wind 1 project in Massachusetts
Iberdrola, reference in the fight against climate change
150 billion euros: this is the amount of investment made by Iberdrola over the last two decades to contribute to the construction of a sustainable energy model. In November 2022, the group announced an investment of 47 billion euros for its electrical networks and its activities around the world, of which 17 billion were reserved for renewable energies. Since 2023, the unique Iberdrola France structure has integrated all the group's activities in onshore and offshore wind power and photovoltaics (development and operation of installations and supply of energy solutions to companies).
Low-cost green energy
The project promoted by Iberdrola is located 24 km south of Martha's Vineyard and 55 km south of the Cape Cod Peninsula. The park of 62 wind turbines should produce a capacity of 800 MW to meet the energy needs of 400,000 homes in Massachusetts. With an investment of 2.5 billion euros, it is the largest commercial-scale offshore park built in the country and one of the largest of the Iberdrola Group in the world. It will avoid the emission of 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year and save $ 3.77 million in energy supply
The powerful GE Haliade X turbines
The wind turbines with a unit power of 13.6 MW are manufactured in the GE factories located in Saint-Nazaire (translation) (turbine assembly) and Cherbourg (translation) (manufacture of blades). GE has the Haliade-X technology, distinguished as one of the best inventions of the year 2019 by Time Magazine! At the end of August 2023, the first Haliade-X 13 MW nacelles manufactured in the Montoir-de-Bretagne plant arrived at the Port of New Bedford terminal in southern Massachusetts.
The Iberdrola group is particularly proud to contribute to the economic and industrial development of the Loire-Atlantique and Normandy regions, for a project that should provide clean energy to Massachusetts this year, before the start of its commercial operation proper in 2024.
