Located in the heart of Poitou-Charentes, the city of Niort (translation) has many tourist assets. Green spaces, gastronomy, culture: it is worth the detour!
La Rochelle, located 40 minutes away, often steals the show! However, Niort is not left out. Served by the TGV, 1:47 hours from Paris, it is easily accessible. This human-sized city combines a charming pedestrian city center and exceptional natural spaces. At the gates of the Poitevin Marshes better known as the Green Venice, the destination therefore promises architectural and historical discoveries and picturesque and wild walks. Our favorites!
The banks of the Sèvre Niortaise
The river crosses the city and offers nice walks along the water. Sports lovers can get on their bike and use the bike paths and the GR®36 via Belle Île. The banks of the Sèvre Niortaise and the Noron lake offer a beautiful bucolic escape.
From Niort to Magné, you can discover footbridges, locks, mills, docks, bridges and port while enjoying a Mediterranean microclimate.
A Keep
The first classified historical monument in the city of Niort, it is the emblem of the city! The imposing double Romanesque keep, the only remnant of the fortified castle of Niort fortified by Henry II of England and his son Richard the Lionheart, offers a panoramic view of the old town. Children will love going on a hunt for clues, solving puzzles to find the dragon's egg!
Bernard d'Agesci Museum
Inaugurated in June 2006, this Museum of Art and History (translation) located in the city center of Niort occupies a building of great beauty. This multidisciplinary museum brings together Fine Arts, Natural History and the Conservatory of Education as well as numerous temporary exhibitions.
Regional natural park of the Poitevin Marsh
Discover in complete tranquility the unique fauna and flora of the canals and marshes. In a protected natural environment, you can approach 300 birds of 75 different species along the shaded path that crisscrosses the 8-hectare park in the heart of the Green Venice. The boat trip with or without a boatman is an authentic moment to be enoyed by the whole family. The most daring will even be able to take a spin in a canoe!
That's not counting the local products! The local gastronomy is also part of the discoveries: goat cheese, mojettes and Charentes-Poitou butter are on the menu of the tables of the region!
