Unique in Europe, this meeting between film professionals and sea workers brings together more than 3,000 participants every year to discuss the challenges facing the oceans and the world in the Pays de Lorient.
Anchored in Morbihan, the festival goes around the world
The Pêcheurs du Monde festival was born out of an association that offers screenings in partnership with local organizations: municipalities, associations, universities and schools are all in tune with this rendezvous for sea lovers. Throughout the year, the festival draws thousands of participants into its nets to raise awareness of critical issues and transitions in energy, economic and climate change. Morbihan is mobilized with the stopover towns of Guidel, Lanester, Larmor-Plage, Ploemeur, Riantec and Vannes. If France is particularly concerned with its second largest maritime domain in the world, the festival offers a panorama of fishermen from all over the world in an eight-day world tour in France, Africa, Britain, Quebec, Ireland, Scotland, Thailand, Guyana, Colombia and Morocco.
The migration issue
The Pêcheurs du Monde maritime festival crosses all the waters of the globe and illustrates the love of fishermen for a difficult profession: the Cuban Orlando, tempted by the promised land of the United States, oscillates between fatality and resistance by illuminating the film winner of the jury prize Voices of the sea by Kim Hopkins. The program reflects current events and the festival evening devoted to Africa reflects the migration issue that the fishermen are witnessing. Of the 80 proposals received, a growing proportion is devoted to this humanitarian tragedy.
Different perspectives
Fishermen, crews, families, coastal communities dependent on the resources of the sea, but also filmmakers and professionals, high school and university students: the richness of this festival lies in the confluence of experiences. In the 2019 prize list, two French awards: Marion Jhoäner with her short film Synti synti embarked us off the coast of Iceland and Frédéric Brunnquell on board a factory boat with Storm Men in search of Blue Whiting (audience and schoolchildren's prize). The 2020 programme promises another miraculous fishing expedition with an arsenal of events, exhibitions and a comic book concert.
Cinema all the way down the line
50 films, some of which have never been shown before, explore solutions that respect the cultures of maritime societies and nature. They are selected by a small team according to their cinematographic quality and proposed as part of the competition. Quality is paramount regardless of format, subject or genre. The festival is also receiving more and more creative documentaries, sometimes very experimental or in ultra-short formats. Professional jury prize or youth prize, Chandrika Sharma women's prize, who has devoted her life to the defence of fishermen-artisans, this meeting of culture and people of the sea is a reference event for experiencing together the sea which contributes to the influence of Morbihan.
