Though the maritime sector has the wind in its sails and is inundated with orders, it is struggling to find its skilled workforce. To meet the growing demand, only one solution: treat the problem at source by creating its own training program in the heart of Chantiers de l'Atlantique .
The success story of Chantiers de l'Atlantique
The Chantiers building sites have been running at full capacity for two years. By 2022, 12 ships will be designed in Saint-Nazaire. General Manager Laurent Castaing can be proud of Chantiers, a world leader in the design of luxury cruise ships. The American shipowner Royal Caribbean Cruises has placed a new order for a 362-meter (1187 ft.) cruise ship to be delivered by 2023. Last state order to date: four tankers for the French Navy. Shipbuilding is doing very well. The flip side of the coin: finding a skilled workforce to meet this exponential demand.
If you want something done right, do it yourself
To cover the recruitment needs of the company, the Chantiers de l'Atlantique School will be offering a training program this fall for the ship's carpenter, welder and pipefitter trades. Open to students on an alternating work/school program and employees of the site wishing to expand their skills, this new training venue will open in the fall to sustain the specific knowledge of the company.
An on-site school
A dedicated structure is being developed on the site of the shipyard. Onsite, an area of 450 square meters with tools similar to those present on the site. The training will reflect realities in the field and will train 10 trainees next year before reaching its cruising speed of 50 trainees per year by 2022.
On the Chantiers deck, the weather is good and all eyes are on the horizon: full employment for 10 years and the need to recruit qualified, autonomous and rigorous employees to meet the drastic specifications of excellence and technicality.
